Welcome!

Hi hello 👋 and welcome to my shiny new blog, The Grant Writer’s Guide to (Nearly) Everything! My goal here is to share insights into best practices, considerations, and other good-to-know information for anyone who writes, edits, or is interested in grants.

What should you expect?

  • The tone is going to be pretty informal. Grants typically call for conventional/formal language, so this is a chance for me to be more conversational.
  • I’m the sole author. Not generative AI, such as ChatGPT. It’s harder for you to trust me as an expert if the content isn’t my own, right?
  • This will be a sometimes blog. I’ll aim to publish once or twice a month.
  • Short(ish) posts. I’ll give you the most relevant information, as succinctly as I can.

What kind of content will you see?

  • Big picture considerations
  • Deep dives
  • Tips and tools
  • The benefits of professional collaboration
  • And more! (I’m open to ideas, so please feel free to reach out)

Hopefully this is all sounding like a good start. But the big question is: why should you listen to me? Great question. Well… I worked in research administration as grant application support, reviewing proposals and developing complex budgets. I’m a professional editor for federal-level academic research grant proposals here in Canada (specifically SSHRC and CIHR). I’m also a professional grant writer and have written winning grants for all levels of funders (corporate, foundation, provincial and federal governments) for my non-profit and academic clients.

So that’s it. This is my welcome mat. I hope you visit often. I’d love to hear your thoughts and any pinch points that we can work through together. Comment below, click on that Contact link at the top, or drop me an email!

Finally, before I truly let you go, I have to acknowledge the wonderful literary geniuses that are Douglas Adams and Bill Bryson. The title of this blog was inspired by Adams’ The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy and Bryson’s A Short History of Nearly Everything. May your life be enriched by these texts.
